Budget-Friendly Beach Destinations in Concepcion

Bulobadiangan Island
How would you like to go on a beach holiday without spending too much on accommodation and transportation? I used to think it’s impossible but after living in Concepcion, Iloilo for four years, I believe it is possible.

If there’s one thing vacationers are concerned of it has to be their expenses. Many splurge on beach vacations but never get their money’s worth. Why? They still go to the same old beaches like Boracay. But if you’re someone who values your privacy and want to spend some time alone with your family without spending too much, you know better than go to the usual beaches others flock to during holidays.

Concepcion is the place to be!

Lo-ong Beach
Located approximately 116 km from Iloilo City, Concepcion is a tourist destination in Northern Iloilo. Though many are still unaware of the beauty this town possesses, those who’ve been here will agree it’s definitely a must-see in Western Visayas.

You have two options when it comes to beaches in Concepcion. You can choose between those located in the mainland and in the islands. If you don’t like traveling by boat, you should consider spending your vacation at SBS Iyang Beach Resort. It is by far the oldest and most visited beach resort in mainland Concepcion. It is located around five minutes from town proper along the road going to San Dionisio. It has several open native cottages along the shore and small ones made of concrete and bamboo for those who prefer spending the night or a few days in the beach. Further, the resort has a convention center ideal for seminars, parties, and the like. Entrance fee is P5.00 per person and cottages start from P50.00 only.

Lo-ong Beach
Nothing is better than spending a day at the beach free of charge and that’s exactly what other beach front properties in Concepcion offer. One of the best places to swim in and lie on the sand the whole day is at the beaches found in Brgy. Lo-ong. All you have to do is ask permission from the owners. Most beaches here are free but there are those who charge P50 to P100 for parking your vehicle. Others also offer chairs and tables for rent. If you prefer going to these beaches, you better bring lots of food, water, and a tent to make the most out of it.

The islands of Concepcion have beaches that can rival those found in Palawan, Cebu, and Camiguin. There’s the famous Sand Bar Beach Resort found in Bulobadiangan Island with its long serpent-like sand bar that stretches from the main island to the waters facing Brgy. Sanggutan. The resort also features a snorkeling site and a breeding ground for giant clams. Native cottages start at P800 and entrance fee is P20 each. Amenities include a common kitchen, toilet, and bath. However, you have to hire a private boat to take you to the resort and back because there are no passenger boats going to this island.

Another budget friendly alternative is Agho Island. It has white sand beach perfect for swimming. Some of the attractions the island is proud of include rock formations sculpted by the wind and sea, coral reef teeming with colorful fishes and corals, and tabon birds that lay their eggs in the sand. You can pitch your tent for free in the island but in case you don’t have one, you can stay in one of their native cottages for only P500. Agho is privately owned and you can reach it by hiring a motorized boat.

Pan De Azucar Island is the most ideal place to stay in Concepcion especially if you want to experience what it’s like to live in the island. You can go trekking, snorkeling, diving, or just plain swimming in its sparkling blue water. Home stay is available in the island starting at P500 per night. The best part is you can easily get there because there are passenger boats around that charge only P20 one way. The pitfall is that they only have one trip per day so if you prefer going to Pan De Azucar, it’s best to stay for the night and go home the next morning. Big passenger boats leave Concepcion Fish Port at 11:00 in the morning. You can take the trip back to town at 6:00 in the morning the following day. In case you want to go home on the same day, there are many private boats you can hire for a reasonable price.

So why spend more when you can still have a blasting beach getaway without going beyond your budget? Concepcion has budget-friendly beach destinations ideal for couples, families, friends, or even for the solo traveler.

Top 3 Reasons Why You Should Go to Bulobadiangan Island

Sand Bar Beach Resort at Bulobadiangan Island

A few years back, Bulobadiangan Island was a virgin island destination with no cottages around, only tall palm trees, thick mangroves, and a few houses at the foot of the mountain. I remember we used to buy “uga” or dry fish here every time we go island hopping. Today, this island is still as lovely as ever only that it has opened its doors (and sand bar) wider to the general public.

Concepcion is one of the farthest towns in Iloilo. It takes around two and a half hours to get here by bus or one and a half hours by private transport. People often associate the town with dried fish and squid. But today, it has become even more popular because people have finally realized the beauty of nature this town has kept hidden for years.

Bulobadiangan Island has transformed into an ultimate beach destination in northern Iloilo with the opening of Sand Bar Beach Resort. The long stretch of white sand composed of pulverized corals and seashells has attracted local and international tourists. Today, you can never really say you’ve been to Concepcion without dropping by this very enticing island.

The famous sand bar of Bulobadiangan.
If you still haven’t been to Bulobadiangan Island, here are three reasons to convince you why it’s the place to be when you visit Concepcion:

   1.    Perfect for swimming and snorkeling
Bulobadiangan’s famous sand bar is perfect for swimming. In fact, you can either swim on the left or right part of the sand bar especially when it’s low tide and it’s at its longest. During high tide, you can dive into the blue waters and swim with colorful fishes.

If you want to see corals of different shapes, sizes, and shades then you’re sure to find them in Bulobadiangan Island. You never have to snorkel too far to see them because they’re just a few feet from shore, specifically in the area facing Danao-Danao Island.

2.    Commune with nature
Imagine spending the day or night in an almost secluded island with only the singing of the birds, rustling of leaves on the trees, and gentle roar of waves crashing to shore to entertain you. Indeed, you’ll feel closer to nature than ever before. If you get tired swimming, you can take a walk along the shore or go trekking around the island. And since they only turn on the generator in the evening from six to ten, you will appreciate the peace and quiet which you’re deprived of in the city.

3.    Budget friendly
Native cottage of the resort
Bulobadiangan Island is the best option for those who are traveling or vacationing on a budget. Why spend thousands of pesos on expensive resorts when you can still have fun and enjoy everything nature has to offer at a cheaper price? Sand Bar Beach Resort has cottages that can cater to the solo traveler to large groups. Their cottages start from P800 and in case you’ll be camping on your tent, you only pay P200. Entrance fee is at P20 each, not bad at all.

Bulobadiangan Island has everything nature has to offer. It is home to white sand beach, rich marine life, and thick forest. To top it all of, it is more affordable compared to other island resorts in the country. So what more can you ask for?

Concepcion’s Hidden Paradise

Agho Island

Beaches are the ultimate destination and Philippines have lots of them. Boracay, Panglao, El Nido, and Coron are just some of the local favorites in the country. However, due to their popularity these places are often crowded the whole year round. Your best option is to look for an ideal beach getaway that offers the same white sand beaches minus the busy crowd.

Located in Western Visayas is the island of Panay which is composed of the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan (where Boracay is located), and Antique. These provinces boast of rich natural resources including breathtaking beaches abundant in marine life. However, the immense popularity of Boracay overshadowed other beaches in the area thus they remain untouched and naturally beautiful. Such is Agho Island in Concepcion, Iloilo.

The Facts
Crystal clear waters welcome visitors to the island
Who would’ve thought that behind the bigger islands that dot the waters of Concepcion lies an untamed beauty? Located northeast of the town proper, Agho Island is not visible to locals and tourists from the mainland. It is a small island, with an area of approximately eight hectares with a long stretch of powdery white sand perfect for swimming, snorkeling, boating, and even diving. The back part of the island faces the open sea with huge rock formations and a shoreline dotted with small rocks of various shapes and colors. Moreover, it is home to a rare Philippine bird known as Tabon or scrub bird. These birds are larger than chickens and they roam around the place and bury their eggs on the sandy patch at the back of the island. Agho is privately owned with only its caretakers as inhabitants so it’s no surprise that it still remains untouched by the claws of industrialization.

Sights and Sounds
Being in Agho Island is like having a little piece of heaven in the palm of your hand. Unlike with commercialized beach resorts, the place only has the sounds of birds singing and the gentle splash of the waves rolling towards shore to entertain you. Once in a while, a motorized boat passes by carrying passengers and merchandise to Agho’s nearest neighbors, islands of Malangabang and Igbon.
Even though there’s no electricity in the island, you can feast your eyes on the natural beauty that surrounds you. From the sandbar, there’s an unobstructive view of the town’s famous landmark as well as the second highest peak in the whole of Panay, the Pan de Azucar. You will also enjoy watching the picturesque display of colors on the sprawling hills and mountainsides of nearby islands.

Swimming is more fun in Agho Island
Things to Do
You will never run out of activities to do when you’re in the island, more so if you have it all to yourself. Its crystal clear waters glisten under the sun and since it’s surrounded by other islands, the water is usually calm the whole year making it a perfect place for swimming.
Your stay won’t be complete without even taking a sneak peek at the marvelous coral gardens in Agho. In fact, you can already see all kinds of fish and corals by snorkeling in waist-deep waters. In case you’re lucky, you can even catch a glimpse of friendly sea cows that explore the waters of Concepcion once in a while.

Fishing is another activity you don’t want to miss. You can ask the caretaker to take you to the deeper part of the beach where you can go hook and line fishing. In case you weren’t able to bring your fishing gears, no need to worry because you can still fish Concepcionanon style using only a thin nylon thread and hook which you can borrow from the caretakers.

Where to Stay
Native cottages and coconut trees provide shade
Don’t expect any five-star hotels in the island because the caretakers only have small cottages for sleeping. Your best option is to bring with you a camping tent or sleeping bag. You can actually pitch one free of charge. There’s a common toilet and bath too. There are also no restaurants in Agho but you can bring your own food and cook them yourself or ask the caretakers to cook for you (you have to pay a small amount of money). It’s advantageous to bring your own drinking water as well because a gallon of water is very expensive in Agho. That’s because the caretakers have to cross to another island to fetch drinking water.

Getting There
It takes 30-40 minutes to reach Agho Island through a motorized boat you can hire in the mainland. In case you’re traveling alone, you can contact the caretakers beforehand and ask them to pick you up on their small motorized boat.

So the next time you have a few days of freedom from your hectic schedule, you know better than spend it inside the house and watch TV. Get out and smell the flowers. Better yet, grab your suntan lotion and head to Agho Island where the beauty of nature awaits you.

Top 3 Attractions in Pan De Azucar Island

The Famous Mt. Manaphag

Your visit to Concepcion will never be complete without dropping by its most popular island, Pan De Azucar. It is the biggest among Concepcion’s 17 islands and home to Panay’s second highest peak and the town’s famous landmark- Mt. Manaphag. Travelers can already tell if they’re nearing Concepcion because the peak of this very steep mountain is visible in neighboring towns like Ajuy, Sara, and San Dionisio.

Pan De Azucar Island has a lot to offer such as these top three attractions:

Hampangan Rock
Hampangan Rock
Hampangan means toy in English and indeed, you’re sure to enjoy every moment of being in this well known attraction. Many climbers, including experts, find it difficult to climb Mt. Manaphag and instead settle to its lower counterpart, Hampangan Rock. You will love the exhilarating experience of climbing up the trail and at the same time marvel at the postcard perfect view below.

Mangrove Eco Park

       Mangrove Eco Park
Concepcionanons are nature lovers and the Mangrove Eco Park is proof of how much they value their environment. The park is surrounded by mangrove trees and a few feet from the shore are several cottages made of native materials like bamboo, nipa, and concrete where tourists can stay. Just a few feet up these cottages is a cliff overlooking the dark blue waters of Pan De Azucar Island and an amazing view of its neighboring islands.

3.

            Lumpatan Rock
Lumpatan Rock
Whether you want to go for a swim or a dive, Lumpatan Rock is a must-see destination in Concepcion. It has a small beach covered with pieces of broken corals and shells which surprisingly feel good to the feet. They don’t hurt at all! But what makes it very attractive is its cove-like cliff and natural arches shaped by the waves. It has a railing made of steel and concrete and the cemented path makes it easier and safer for people to pass by. The best part is the water in Lumpatan is deep enough to dive in.

So what are you waiting for? Visit Pan De Azucar Island today!

Agho Island: Concepcion's Little Boracay

Photo Credit: Dr. Maria Rosanna Subade
I’ve always considered myself very lucky to be living here in Concepcion, Iloilo. I wake up every morning to the gentle sound of the waves rolling towards shore and the melodious singing of birds in the mangroves behind the house. Sometimes, my dog’s thunderous barking joins in the symphony as he welcomes the approaching fishing boats in our front yard, which happens to be the shoreline facing the waters of Concepcion.

But do you know what makes me even luckier? Well, it’s the fact that I no longer have to travel for hours just to have a grand beach vacation. Armed with my snorkel and sunblock, all I have to do is ride a motorized boat and after 30 minutes, I’m already at Concepcion’s little Boracay- Agho Island.

I’ll never get over the breathtaking beauty of Agho’s long stretch of powdery white sand that glistens under the sun. In fact, it’s the first thing every person will notice upon reaching the island. Even passersby can't help but look at it with admiration and longing. I often tell my friends that the sand feels like that of Boracay’s Station 3, only better because the sand bar here actually changes in size and shape according to the season.

Agho is one of Concepcion’s uninhabited islands with only their caretakers around. It has small nipa cottages, common toilet and bath, and a kitchen near the house of the caretakers where you can cook your meals. It’s the best destination for backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts who can easily find comfort in their own tent or sleeping bag. But if you’re the picky type, better not stay overnight.

Here are some fun things to do while in Agho:

·         Swimming
Who can resist the crystalline blue green water of Agho? It is by far the most ideal place for swimming in Concepcion. There are no big waves here because it is bordered by the islands of Malangabang and Igbon. Above all, there are very few people who swim here and if you’re lucky, you can have the island all to yourself.

·         Snorkeling
The first time our uncle brought us to the island for some snorkeling, I know I must go back and do it again, and again. When you face the island, the left side fronting Malangabang has a wonderful snorkeling site. You’ll be surprised to find colorful fishes playing hide and seek among the corals only a few feet from the shore.

·         Trekking
If you’re the outdoorsy type, then don’t go home without trekking the whole island. Huge rock formations landscaped by the sea and wind serve as Agho’s natural protection from possible tidal waves. Contrary to the sandy area in front, the shore here is covered with rocks of all shapes, colors, and sizes. The water is dark, almost black, and deeper so it’s not really advisable for swimming.

So why not try something different for a change on your next vacation? A trip to Agho Island is all you need to relax, enjoy, and appreciate God’s creations.
