How would you like to go on a beach holiday without spending too much on accommodation and transportation? I used to think it’s impossible but after living in Concepcion, Iloilo for four years, I believe it is possible.

If there’s one thing vacationers are concerned of it has to be their expenses. Many splurge on beach vacations but never get their money’s worth. Why? They still go to the same old beaches like Boracay. But if you’re someone who values your privacy and want to spend some time alone with your family without spending too much, you know better than go to the usual beaches others flock to during holidays.

Concepcion is the place to be!

Located approximately 116 km from Iloilo City, Concepcion is a tourist destination in Northern Iloilo. Though many are still unaware of the beauty this town possesses, those who’ve been here will agree it’s definitely a must-see in Western Visayas.

You have two options when it comes to beaches in Concepcion. You can choose between those located in the mainland and in the islands. If you don’t like traveling by boat, you should consider spending your vacation at SBS Iyang Beach Resort. It is by far the oldest and most visited beach resort in mainland Concepcion. It is located around five minutes from town proper along the road going to San Dionisio. It has several open native cottages along the shore and small ones made of concrete and bamboo for those who prefer spending the night or a few days in the beach. Further, the resort has a convention center ideal for seminars, parties, and the like. Entrance fee is P5.00 per person and cottages start from P50.00 only.

Lo-ong Beach

Nothing is better than spending a day at the beach free of charge and that’s exactly what other beach front properties in Concepcion offer. One of the best places to swim in and lie on the sand the whole day is at the beaches found in Brgy. Lo-ong. All you have to do is ask permission from the owners. Most beaches here are free but there are those who charge P50 to P100 for parking your vehicle. Others also offer chairs and tables for rent. If you prefer going to these beaches, you better bring lots of food, water, and a tent to make the most out of it.

The islands of Concepcion have beaches that can rival those found in Palawan, Cebu, and Camiguin. There’s the famous Sand Bar Beach Resort found in Bulobadiangan Island with its long serpent-like sand bar that stretches from the main island to the waters facing Brgy. Sanggutan. The resort also features a snorkeling site and a breeding ground for giant clams. Native cottages start at P800 and entrance fee is P20 each. Amenities include a common kitchen, toilet, and bath. However, you have to hire a private boat to take you to the resort and back because there are no passenger boats going to this island.

Another budget friendly alternative is Agho Island. It has white sand beach perfect for swimming. Some of the attractions the island is proud of include rock formations sculpted by the wind and sea, coral reef teeming with colorful fishes and corals, and tabon birds that lay their eggs in the sand. You can pitch your tent for free in the island but in case you don’t have one, you can stay in one of their native cottages for only P500. Agho is privately owned and you can reach it by hiring a motorized boat.

Pan De Azucar Island is the most ideal place to stay in Concepcion especially if you want to experience what it’s like to live in the island. You can go trekking, snorkeling, diving, or just plain swimming in its sparkling blue water. Home stay is available in the island starting at P500 per night. The best part is you can easily get there because there are passenger boats around that charge only P20 one way. The pitfall is that they only have one trip per day so if you prefer going to Pan De Azucar, it’s best to stay for the night and go home the next morning. Big passenger boats leave Concepcion Fish Port at 11:00 in the morning. You can take the trip back to town at 6:00 in the morning the following day. In case you want to go home on the same day, there are many private boats you can hire for a reasonable price.

Being in Agho Island is like having a little piece of heaven in the palm of your hand. Unlike with commercialized beach resorts, the place only has the sounds of birds singing and the gentle splash of the waves rolling towards shore to entertain you. Once in a while, a motorized boat passes by carrying passengers and merchandise to Agho’s nearest neighbors, islands of Malangabang and Igbon.

Even though there’s no electricity in the island, you can feast your eyes on the natural beauty that surrounds you. From the sandbar, there’s an unobstructive view of the town’s famous landmark as well as the second highest peak in the whole of Panay, the Pan de Azucar. You will also enjoy watching the picturesque display of colors on the sprawling hills and mountainsides of nearby islands.

You will never run out of activities to do when you’re in the island, more so if you have it all to yourself. Its crystal clear waters glisten under the sun and since it’s surrounded by other islands, the water is usually calm the whole year making it a perfect place for swimming.

Your stay won’t be complete without even taking a sneak peek at the marvelous coral gardens in Agho. In fact, you can already see all kinds of fish and corals by snorkeling in waist-deep waters. Fishing is another activity you don’t want to miss. You can ask the caretaker to take you to the deeper part of the beach where you can go hook and line fishing. In case you weren’t able to bring your fishing gears, no need to worry because you can still fish Concepcionanon style using only a thin nylon thread and hook which you can borrow from the caretakers.

Where to Stay

Don’t expect any five-star hotels in the island because the caretakers only have small cottages for sleeping. Your best option is to bring with you a camping tent or sleeping bag. You can actually pitch one free of charge. There’s a common toilet and bath too. There are also no restaurants in Agho but you can bring your own food and cook them yourself or ask the caretakers to cook for you (you have to pay a small amount of money). It’s advantageous to bring your own drinking water as well because a gallon of water is very expensive in Agho. That’s because the caretakers have to cross to another island to fetch drinking water.

Getting There

It takes 30-40 minutes to reach Agho Island through a motorized boat you can hire in the mainland. In case you’re traveling alone, you can contact the caretakers beforehand and ask them to pick you up on their small motorized boat.

So the next time you have a few days of freedom from your hectic schedule, you know better than spend it inside the house and watch TV. Get out and smell the flowers. Better yet, grab your suntan lotion and head to Agho Island where the beauty of nature awaits you.

Agho Island: Concepcion's Little Boracay

I’ve always considered myself very lucky to be living here in Concepcion, Iloilo. I wake up every morning to the gentle sound of the waves rolling towards shore and the melodious singing of birds in the mangroves behind the house. Sometimes, my dog’s thunderous barking joins in the symphony as he welcomes the approaching fishing boats in our front yard, which happens to be the shoreline facing the waters of Concepcion.

But do you know what makes me even luckier? Well, it’s the fact that I no longer have to travel for hours just to have a grand beach vacation. Armed with my snorkel and sunblock, all I have to do is ride a motorized boat and after 30 minutes, I’m already at Concepcion’s little Boracay- Agho Island.

I’ll never get over the breathtaking beauty of Agho’s long stretch of powdery white sand that glistens under the sun. In fact, it’s the first thing every person will notice upon reaching the island. Even passersby can't help but look at it with admiration and longing. I often tell my friends that the sand feels like that of Boracay’s Station 3, only better because the sand bar here actually changes in size and shape according to the season.

Agho is one of Concepcion’s uninhabited islands with only their caretakers around. It has small nipa cottages, common toilet and bath, and a kitchen near the house of the caretakers where you can cook your meals. It’s the best destination for backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts who can easily find comfort in their own tent or sleeping bag. But if you’re the picky type, better not stay overnight.

·         Swimming

Who can resist the crystalline blue green water of Agho? It is by far the most ideal place for swimming in Concepcion. There are no big waves here because it is bordered by the islands of Malangabang and Igbon. Above all, there are very few people who swim here and if you’re lucky, you can have the island all to yourself.

·         Snorkeling

The first time our uncle brought us to the island for some snorkeling, I know I must go back and do it again, and again. When you face the island, the left side fronting Malangabang has a wonderful snorkeling site. You’ll be surprised to find colorful fishes playing hide and seek among the corals only a few feet from the shore.

·         Trekking

If you’re the outdoorsy type, then don’t go home without trekking the whole island. Huge rock formations landscaped by the sea and wind serve as Agho’s natural protection from possible tidal waves. Contrary to the sandy area in front, the shore here is covered with rocks of all shapes, colors, and sizes. The water is dark, almost black, and deeper so it’s not really advisable for swimming.
